catching on

Finally seeing it

Catching on means starting to understand something that wasn't immediately clear: It took me a while, but I'm finally catching on.

It also describes something gaining popularity or acceptance: The trend is catching on with younger consumers.

Both senses share the idea of something taking hold—whether comprehension in the mind or appeal in the culture.
