getting it

Catching on now

Getting it means understanding or comprehending something, especially after initial confusion: I didn't get the joke at first, but now I'm getting it.

The phrase can also refer to receiving punishment or harsh treatment: When Mom finds out, you're really getting it.

In sexual slang, getting it means having sex, often with approval implied: Good for her—she's getting it.
