land down under

Southern hemisphere continent

Land down under is an informal term for Australia, referring to its position in the Southern Hemisphere—"under" the equator from the perspective of Europe and North America.

The phrase gained wide currency through the 1981 Men at Work song "Down Under." It appears in casual speech and tourism contexts: I spent a year backpacking around the land down under.
