land-yacht

Beach sailing craft

A land-yacht is a large, heavy automobile—typically an American sedan from the 1960s through 1980s with a long wheelbase, soft suspension, and boat-like handling: My grandfather still drives that old land-yacht.

The term is affectionate or gently mocking.

Separately, a land yacht is a wind-powered vehicle with wheels and a sail, used recreationally on beaches or dry lake beds.
