lance corporals
Lowest noncommissioned officers
Lance corporals is the plural of lance corporal, a military rank in several armed forces.
In the U.S.
Marine Corps, it falls between private first class and corporal—the first rank with any supervisory responsibility.
British and Commonwealth armies use the rank similarly.
The "lance" originally indicated a soldier temporarily filling a higher position without the full pay: The lance corporals supervised the work detail.
