lake fly
Lakeside buzzing pest
Lake fly refers to any of several species of small flying insects that swarm in enormous numbers near lakes, particularly in the Great Lakes region and parts of Africa.
Despite their name, they're usually midges or mayflies rather than true flies.
The swarms can be so dense they obscure visibility and coat surfaces.
Lake flies are harmless to humans—they don't bite or sting—and serve as important food for fish and birds.
