knuckle-buster

Tight-space wrench hazard

A knuckle-buster is any task or tool that scrapes or bruises the knuckles during use.

Mechanics apply it to wrenches that slip in tight spaces, and more broadly to any difficult manual repair job: That alternator replacement was a real knuckle-buster.

The term also refers to old-style manual credit card imprinters, whose sliding action could catch unwary fingers.
