knock-knock jokes

"Who's there?" precursors

Knock-knock jokes are a form of call-and-response humor built on a rigid five-line formula.

One person says "knock knock," the other asks "who's there?" The first names something, the second repeats it with "who?" and the punchline delivers a pun: Knock knock. Who's there? Lettuce. Lettuce who? Lettuce in, it's cold out here!

The format is particularly associated with children's humor.
