key deposit
Refundable access payment
A key deposit is money paid to a landlord or property manager as security against lost or unreturned keys.
The deposit is typically refunded when tenants return all keys at the end of a lease: We got our key deposit back when we moved out.
The amount is usually modest compared to security deposits for the unit itself.
