keep straight

Maintain correct course

To keep straight is to maintain clarity or avoid confusion about something: I can never keep straight which twin is which.

It often appears with objects that are easily muddled—names, facts, schedules.

To keep someone straight is to correct them or keep them honest: My accountant keeps me straight on tax rules.

Keeping straight can also mean staying on a proper path, avoiding trouble or dishonesty.
