junior year abroad

Third-year foreign study

Junior year abroad is a study program where college students spend their third year at a foreign university.

The practice became popular at American colleges in the mid-twentieth century as a way to gain language fluency and international experience: She spent her junior year abroad in Paris.

The phrase sometimes applies loosely to any semester or year of undergraduate study in another country.
