jump ship

Desert your post

To jump ship is to abandon a post or commitment, especially abruptly or when things go badly.

The phrase comes from sailors deserting their vessel: Three crew members jumped ship in port.

Now it applies broadly to leaving any organization or situation: When the company started struggling, the best employees jumped ship.
