Iodine pills are tablets containing potassium iodide, taken to protect the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine during a nuclear emergency.
The thyroid, saturated with stable iodine, won't take up the dangerous form.
They're stockpiled near nuclear plants and distributed during disasters: Officials handed out iodine pills after the reactor leak.
They don't protect against other radiation types.
