intellectualizing

Thinking instead feeling

Intellectualizing is treating something emotional or visceral as an abstract problem to be analyzed.

The word often carries a note of criticism—that someone is avoiding genuine feeling by retreating into thought: Stop intellectualizing and tell me how you actually feel.

In psychology, intellectualization is a defense mechanism that distances a person from distressing emotions by focusing on facts and logic rather than feelings.
