inside lanes
Runners' preferred position
Inside lanes are the lanes closest to the center or inner edge of a road, track, or pool.
On a highway, the inside lane is typically the fast lane nearest the median.
On a curved track, inside lanes offer a shorter distance, which is why runners in those positions start behind those in outside lanes.
