infield flies

High inward batted balls

In baseball, infield flies are fly balls hit to the infield when runners occupy first and second base (or bases loaded) with fewer than two outs.

The infield fly rule automatically calls the batter out, preventing fielders from deliberately dropping the ball to turn easy double plays.

The umpire signaled infield fly, and the runners held their bases.
