industrial city

Factory-filled urban center

An industrial city is one whose economy centers on manufacturing, processing, or heavy industry.

Such cities typically developed around factories, mills, or refineries, often with working-class populations and infrastructure built to support production: Pittsburgh was once America's quintessential industrial city.

Many have since transitioned to service economies, leaving the term to describe either their history or their ongoing character.
