in-place

Where it belongs

In-place describes something happening where it already exists, without moving to another location.

In computing, an in-place algorithm modifies data directly rather than creating a copy: The sort operates in-place to save memory.

More broadly, in-place means without displacement: The statue was restored in-place rather than moved to a workshop.
