imaginal

Existing in thought

Imaginal has two distinct technical meanings.

In entomology, it refers to the imago—the final, adult stage of an insect's development: imaginal discs, imaginal cells.

In psychology, particularly Jungian and archetypal traditions, imaginal describes a realm of images and symbols that mediates between the literal and the purely abstract—neither imaginary (unreal) nor physical, but possessing its own reality: imaginal experience, the imaginal realm.
