idlings

Engines turning, parked

Idlings are instances of running an engine without engaging the transmission, or more broadly, periods of doing nothing productive.

The word captures repeated or multiple episodes of such inactivity: The truck's idlings in the parking lot wasted fuel.

It can also describe leisurely, aimless behavior: summer idlings by the river.
