hyraxes

Small African mammals

Hyraxes is the plural of hyrax, a small herbivorous mammal native to Africa and the Middle East.

Despite resembling rodents, hyraxes are surprisingly close relatives of elephants and manatees.

They live in rocky terrain and are known for their rubbery foot pads that provide grip on steep surfaces: Hyraxes sunned themselves on the cliffs.
