hypothesis test
Data-driven decision procedure
A hypothesis test is a statistical procedure for deciding whether observed data support a particular claim about a population.
You start with a null hypothesis (typically that no effect exists), collect data, then calculate whether the results would be unlikely if the null hypothesis were true.
If unlikely enough, you reject the null hypothesis in favor of an alternative: The hypothesis test showed the drug performed better than placebo.
Also called significance test.
