hydrophobias

Fears of water

Hydrophobias is the plural of hydrophobia, which has two connected meanings.

The older sense is rabies—the disease causes throat spasms that make swallowing painful, so infected animals avoid water despite extreme thirst.

The newer sense is an irrational fear of water, particularly of swimming or submersion: Her hydrophobia kept her away from pools.
