hung juries
Verdictless trial conclusions
Hung juries are juries that cannot reach a verdict because members remain deadlocked after extended deliberation.
Most criminal trials require unanimous agreement; when jurors cannot all agree on guilt or innocence, the jury is said to be hung.
A hung jury typically results in a mistrial, after which prosecutors may retry the case with a new jury or drop the charges.
