hot-air balloons

Buoyant wicker gondolas

Hot-air balloons are aircraft that achieve lift through heated air contained in a large fabric envelope.

The principle is simple: hot air is less dense than the cooler air surrounding it, causing the balloon to rise.

A burner beneath the envelope's opening periodically heats the air to maintain altitude, while allowing it to cool causes descent.

Hot-air balloons drift with the wind and cannot be steered horizontally, making them dependent on wind patterns for direction.

We watched the hot-air balloons launch at dawn.
