horseless carriages

Motor vehicles, pre-Ford

Horseless carriages is an old-fashioned term for automobiles, used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when cars were novel enough to require explanation by reference to horse-drawn vehicles.

The phrase now sounds quaint or deliberately archaic: My grandfather called them horseless carriages until the day he died.
