hook and chain

Wrecker's grabbing gear

Hook and chain refers to a towing apparatus consisting of a metal hook attached to a length of chain, used to drag or pull vehicles—especially in recovery operations.

This older method wraps the chain around a vehicle's frame or axle: The tow truck used a hook and chain to haul the wreck off the highway.

Largely replaced by wheel-lift and flatbed systems for undamaged vehicles, hook and chain remains common for towing wrecks and junk cars where cosmetic damage doesn't matter.
