holy empire

Consecrated sovereign realm

A holy empire is an empire claiming divine sanction or religious authority as the basis for its rule.

The term most often refers to the Holy Roman Empire, the loose confederation of Central European territories that lasted from the medieval period until 1806: Voltaire quipped that the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire.

The phrase can describe any political entity that derives legitimacy from sacred rather than secular sources.
