holding deposit

Secures your spot

A holding deposit is a sum paid to temporarily reserve something—typically a rental property—while paperwork is completed or a decision is finalized.

Unlike a security deposit, it's paid before signing a lease to take the property off the market: We put down a holding deposit to secure the apartment.

The deposit may be refundable, applied toward rent, or forfeited if the prospective tenant backs out.
