Divesting a division
Hiving off is separating a part from a larger whole, typically when a company divests a subsidiary or division: The corporation is hiving off its media assets.
The image comes from beekeeping, where part of a colony leaves to establish a new hive.
More common in British than American English, where *spinning off* is the usual term.
