hiving

Collecting into colonies

Hiving is the act of putting bees into a hive, or more broadly, storing or collecting things together as bees do with honey.

Figuratively, it describes gathering people or things into a group or enclosed space: The workers were hiving into the factory at shift change.

In business contexts, hiving off means separating a subsidiary or division from a parent company.
