historic trail

Storied walking route

A historic trail is a route designated for its significance in history—a path followed by explorers, migrants, settlers, or armies.

The term usually refers to officially recognized routes: the Oregon Trail, the Trail of Tears, the Lewis and Clark Trail.

Some are preserved for hiking or driving; others exist mainly as markers and interpretive sites along modern roads.
