four-lane highway

Wide divided road

A four-lane highway is a road with two lanes of traffic in each direction, typically divided by a median or barrier.

The term distinguishes such roads from smaller two-lane highways and larger six- or eight-lane expressways: The old two-lane was upgraded to a four-lane highway in the 1970s.
