hippocampuses

Brain's memory centers

Hippocampuses is the plural of hippocampus, a seahorse-shaped structure deep in the brain essential for forming new memories and spatial navigation.

The word comes from Greek for "sea monster horse," and in classical mythology a hippocampus was a creature with a horse's forequarters and a fish's tail.

The anatomical plural is sometimes hippocampi: Patients with damaged hippocampi struggle to form new memories.
