Heart-shaped nut meat
A heartnut is a variety of Japanese walnut cultivated for its distinctively heart-shaped nuts, which crack open easily along a central seam.
The trees are cold-hardy and produce nuts with a mild, buttery flavor prized by growers and foragers.
We planted a heartnut tree because the shells are so much easier to crack than black walnuts.
