haycock
Conical hay pile
A haycock is a small, conical pile of hay left in a field to dry before being gathered into larger stacks or transported to storage.
The shape allows rain to run off while air circulates to cure the hay.
Though the practice has largely been replaced by modern baling equipment, haycocks remain a familiar image in pastoral landscapes and rural literature.
The field was dotted with haycocks after the morning's mowing.
