Itchy red welts
Harvest mites are tiny arachnid larvae that infest humans and animals in late summer and fall, causing intensely itchy red welts.
They're also called chiggers or berry bugs.
The larvae feed on skin cells, not blood, and drop off after a few days, but the irritation persists: I picked up harvest mites walking through the tall grass.
