hard-shell clams
Thick-shelled edible mollusks
Hard-shell clams are edible bivalves of the Atlantic coast, distinguished from soft-shell clams by their thick, rigid shells.
The term covers several size grades sold under different names: littlenecks are smallest, then cherrystones, then chowder clams.
We dug hard-shell clams at low tide.
Also called quahogs.
