halflife

Radioactive decay measure

The halflife of a radioactive substance is the time required for half its atoms to decay.

Plutonium-239 has a halflife of 24,000 years; radon-222, less than four days.

The concept extends to anything that diminishes exponentially: the halflife of a drug in the bloodstream, the halflife of a celebrity's fame.

Also spelled half-life.
