hail and farewell

Hello and goodbye

Hail and farewell is a greeting that acknowledges both arrival and departure in the same breath, used for someone whose presence will be brief or whose loss is imminent.

The phrase comes from Latin *ave atque vale*, famously used by the Roman poet Catullus mourning his brother.

It often marks military ceremonies honoring departing or fallen members: The regiment held a hail and farewell for the transferred officers.
