green card lottery
Visa diversity draw
The green card lottery is a U.S. government program that randomly selects applicants from countries with low immigration rates to receive permanent residency.
Officially called the Diversity Visa Program, it awards around 50,000 green cards annually: My cousin won the green card lottery and moved to New York.
Applicants must meet education or work requirements, and demand far exceeds available slots.
