greatest common factor
Largest mutual divisor
The greatest common factor of two or more numbers is the largest number that divides evenly into all of them.
For 12 and 18, the greatest common factor is 6.
Also called greatest common divisor.
The concept extends to algebraic expressions: the greatest common factor of 4x² and 6x is 2x.
