aesthetic judgment

Evaluating artistic merit

Aesthetic judgment is the evaluation of something's beauty, artistic merit, or sensory appeal.

Unlike factual claims, aesthetic judgments are subjective assessments of taste: Whether the building is ugly is a matter of aesthetic judgment.

The term appears in philosophy and criticism when distinguishing responses based on feeling from those based on logic or evidence.
