Gold bricks are bars of gold bullion, the standard form for storing and trading large quantities of gold.
A gold brick can also be something that looks valuable but is worthless—from the classic swindle of selling gold-plated lead as solid gold.
To gold-brick is to shirk work or loaf on the job, and a goldbricker is someone who does so: Half the crew were goldbricks collecting a paycheck.
