general orders

Standing military regulations

General orders are standing military instructions that govern routine duties and conduct, especially for guards and sentries.

Every branch of the U.S. military has its own set, typically memorized during basic training: Recruits must recite the eleven general orders.

The term also refers to official announcements from a commanding officer distributed throughout a command.
