gender bender
Defies sex norms
Gender bender describes a person who defies conventional gender expectations—through appearance, behavior, or identity.
The term emerged in the 1980s for those who mixed masculine and feminine presentation: David Bowie was the ultimate gender bender.
It can also describe media that plays with gender roles or anything that challenges binary assumptions.
The related gender-bending works as an adjective: a gender-bending performance.
