Industrial cities are urban centers whose economies and character are defined by manufacturing.
The term evokes the factories, mills, and working-class neighborhoods that emerged during industrialization: Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Manchester were quintessential industrial cities.
Many such cities have declined as manufacturing moved elsewhere, leaving behind rusted infrastructure and economic hardship—hence the American "Rust Belt."
