gag rules
Discussion shutdown procedures
Gag rules are regulations that prohibit discussion of certain topics.
The term originated in the U.S.
Congress during the 1830s–40s when rules automatically tabled antislavery petitions without debate.
Today gag rules commonly restrict what healthcare providers can discuss with patients: The clinic operates under a gag rule that prevents counselors from mentioning abortion.
