frontier forts

Wilderness military installations

Frontier forts were military outposts established at the edges of settled territory, particularly during westward expansion in North America.

They served as bases for soldiers protecting settlers, trading posts, and points of contact—often violent—with indigenous populations.

Many American towns grew up around former frontier forts: Fort Worth, Fort Wayne, Fort Collins.
