fringe festivals
Indie theater gatherings
Fringe festivals are arts festivals featuring independent, experimental, or unconventional performances—typically theater, comedy, and music.
They operate on an open-access model where any act can participate without selection by organizers.
The term comes from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which began in 1947 when uninvited performers staged shows on the "fringe" of the official Edinburgh International Festival.
We caught three shows at the fringe festival this weekend.
